Improving the sound insulation of a ceiling is done by increasing the mass and creating separation. Applying the NSSC2 or NSSC2+ boards fixed to the ceiling will reduce airborne noise through an existing ceiling for low levels of noise, using one of the ceiling systems will offer a better level of soundproofing against airborne and impact noise, while keeping ceiling height loss to a minimum. Installing an independent ceiling is the best way of soundproofing your ceiling, but means the biggest loss of height in the room, around 6 inches for an average sized room.

Soundproofing an Existing Ceiling without Removing the Ceiling

If you can not remove the existing ceiling and can not afford to loose height in the room the NSSC2 or NSSC2+ panels can be fixed into the joists through the plasterboard, this will reduce airborne noise at low levels. Ceiling Option 3 which utilises the Soundbreaker Bars and the NSSC1+ panel will also reduce airborne noise levels and impact noise better than the ceiling boards on there own. Installing an independent ceiling below the existing ceiling will give the highest levels of soundproofing, this option will mean a drop in ceiling height of a minimum of 6 inches due to the installation of new joists to incorporate the 100mm DFM insulation and the acoustic plasterboard and a 25mm gap between the existing ceiling and the top of the new joists. Soundproofing a Ceiling by Removing the Ceiling

Removing the existing ceiling and utilising the ceiling cavity and joists means you can achieve a good level of noise reduction with out loosing ceiling height. Ceiling Option 1 and Ceiling Option 2 would be our recommended options for this type of application, this is the most common method of soundproofing in domestic situations for reducing impact and airborne noise. More information.
