Building Regulations (2000), Approved Document E 2003
The Building Regulations & Building Standards are approved by the UK Parliament and Scottish Executive. This deal with the minimum standards of design and building work for the construction of domestic, commercial and industrial buildings.
The purpose of Building Control is to ensure that anyone wishing to design, construct or alter a building does so to a set of national standards. This is to secure the health and safety of people who are in, or in the vicinity of the building, to conserve fuel and power, and to provide facilities and access for the disabled.
Approved Document E Resistance to the Passage of Sound 2003 edition plus amendments 2004 (ADE2003), stipulates single figure sound insulation ratings for both airborne radiated noise, at separating party floors and walls, and for impact radiated noise at party floors.
Regulation E1 concerns itself with protection against sound from other parts of the same building and adjoining buildings and is relevant to separating walls and floors between dwelling houses, flats and rooms for residential purpose.
