Wall Preparation

Remove any skirting boards, coving and picture rails from the wall. Electrical fittings such as lights and plug sockets should be removed and extended in preparation for putting them back in place at the end of the installation. If you have the insulation to place inside the floor cavities to stop flanking noise you should remove the necessary floorboards and in fill with the insulation and then replace the floorboards. You are now ready to begin installing your direct to wall panels.

Applying the Wall Boards

  1. The first board you put in place should be to the left or right hand side of the wall that is being soundproofed, ensuring the board will fit tightly into the corner, if the wall runs out you may need to trim the edge of the board to ensure a tight fit. Before you start applying the boards to the wall you should prepare the adhesive, mix the adhesive in a large bucket with water and mix into a paste, instructions for mixing the adhesive is supplied with the bags.
  2. Once the adhesive is ready you should apply it to the back of the board in blobs, four rows of four the size of your fist, you can apply the adhesive to the wall rather than the board if you prefer.
  3. In order to apply the board to the wall you simply push the panel on to the wall applying pressure onto the board, you can tap the boards with a hammer and a piece of wood, the back of the board should not be flat to the wall, you should leave a gap of about 10mm from the back of the board and the wall, this will mean the adhesive is the only thing connecting the board and the wall. Before applying the next board you should apply acoustic sealant to the edge of the board you have just installed, this will mean when you apply the next board you will create a good seal between the boards when you push them together. You should repeat this until you have completed the first row. Leave a 3-5mm gap between the return walls and the edge of the board; fill the gap with acoustic sealant to ensure a complete acoustic seal.
  4. If you need to cut the boards this can be done with a hand saw, jigsaw or hand held circular saw (dust extraction should be fitted if using this method). The next row of boards are placed on top of the first row, you should stagger the joints in a brick pattern between the first and second row. Ensure that you apply the acoustic sealant between the two rows of boards as well as the edges. Once all the boards are in place you should fill any gaps between the boards and adjoining walls, floor and ceiling.

Completing the Installation

Once the boards are in place and have been sealed we recommend the boards are plastered. Skirting and coving can be placed back onto the wall; the electrical points can be fixed back to the wall ensuring they are well sealed once in place.
