Description

Ceiling System 1

Ceiling system 1 has ben designed for soundproofing ceilings with maximum noise reduction and minimum space loss. It is a high-performing ceiling soundproofing solution that offers excellent airborne and impact sound reduction with only 85mm of ceiling height loss. Ceiling system 1 achieves high levels of noise reduction due to the combination of materials and how they are installed onto the ceiling. The system combines two layers of insulation to increase airborne sound reduction.

The separation, key to ceiling soundproofing, is created by fitting the soundbreaker bars that reduce vibration through the building’s structure.

The final layer of boards is applied directly into the soundbreaker bars. The Noisestop 1+ panels supplied as part of this solution combine a 12.5mm acoustic plasterboard and a 10kg mass vinyl sheet. The resultant panel blocks sound and reduces vibration through the plasterboard.

  • Noise reduction against airborne and impact sound
  • 60dB airborne sound
  • 5dB impact sound
  • 30-minute fire protection

We have put these soundproofing systems together as examples of combinations of products you can use to soundproof a room. You can use various combinations to suit your requirements, whether you are looking for additional sound control or you might have a bit of extra space for a thicker solution.

Ceiling System 1 Features

  • DFM acoustic insulation –  100mm DFM acoustic insulation and a 50mm DFM acoustic insulation layer to block and absorb airborne sound transfer through the ceiling.
  • Soundbreaker Bars – The separation, which is key to ceiling soundproofing, is created by fitting the soundbreaker bars acoustic hangers that reduce vibration through the structure of the building. The final layer of boards is applied directly to the soundbreaker bars.
  • Noisestop 1+ panels – Supplied as part of this solution, Noisestop 1+ Panels combine a 12.5mm acoustic plasterboard and a 10kg mass-loaded vinyl sheet. The resultant panel blocks sound and reduces vibration through the plasterboard. Both impact and airborne sound are significantly reduced when the entire solution is combined.
  • AC50 acoustic sealants – Apply AC50 acoustic sealant to the edges of the panels and the perimeter of the new ceiling.

Fitting Ceiling System 1

  • If you are soundproofing existing ceilings, you will have to remove them before fitting ceiling system 1.
  • Infill the joist cavity with 100mm acoustic insulation. Ensure the whole area is filled. Acoustic insulation slabs will friction fit between the joist if you cut them wider than the opening.
  • Attach an additional timber batten perpendicular to the joist and fill with the 50mm acoustic insulation slabs.
  • Fit the soundbreaker bars at 400mm centres. The soundbreaker bars are attached to the timber battens by screwing through the pre-drilled holes.
  • Attach the Noisestop 1+ panels to the bars by screwing through the boards into the wide corrugated flange on the soundbreaker bar.
  • Use the acoustic sealant to seal the edges of the panels and around the perimeter of the ceiling.

Wall and Ceiling Soundproofing

Make sure you are getting the right soundproofing for your needs. Understanding the most common types of noise and how to stop them will help you decide the right solution.

Different Types of Sound

  • Airborne sounds – Conversation, TV noise and radios are examples of airborne sound. The best way to stop airborne sounds is to add mass/density to the walls or ceilings.
  • Impact/vibration sounds – Footfall and moving furniture across a floor are examples of impact sounds. The best way to reduce these sounds is to create separation.

In summary, the best way to reduce airborne sounds is by increasing the mass of the area you would like to soundproof. Reducing impact/vibration sounds is achieved by creating separation within the structure.

Reducing Impact and Airborne Sounds

By following some of these steps, you will ensure you get the best level of soundproofing for your room.

  • Mass/Density – Increasing the mass and density of the area you are soundproofing will block airborne sounds from transferring between rooms. You will increase the mass of walls and ceilings using materials such as soundproof panels or high-density acoustic insulation slabs.
  • Separation – Incorporating separation within the structure will reduce vibration and impact sounds transferring between rooms. Achieve separation by building independent stud walls and ceilings. If you don’t have the space in the room, you can use acoustic clips and resilient channels to decouple the wall and ceiling.
  • Absorption – Use materials that are going to absorb sounds. Acoustic insulation is suitable for sound absorption as it converts the sound waves into heat as it passes through the insulation. Dense mass loaded barriers will also dampen and absorb sound.

    Ceiling System 1

    Ceiling preparation

Before work can commence on installing Ceiling System1 the existing plasterboard must be removed. Once the ceiling has been removed you will be left with exposed ceiling joists, you are now ready to fit Ceiling System 1.

    Step1.

Infill the existing ceiling joists with the 100mm acoustic insulation slabs between the ceiling joists. Using a long serrated knife or an old bread knife to cut the insulation slabs slightly larger then the

Opening between the joists, this will allow you to push the slabs between the joists to friction fit in place. Cover the whole ceiling area ensuring no gaps are left between the insulation, and between the insulation and the joists.

    Step 2.

Once you have insulated between the joists you can now attach the battens to the underside of the joists. The battens are fixed perpendicular to the ceiling joists, Fix the battening in place with screws. Leave a gap of 590mm between each batten, this will allow for full slabs of the 50mm insulation to be inserted inside the battening. Completely fill the new battening with the 50mm acoustic insulation ensuring no gaps are left.

    Step 3.

Fit the soundbreaker bars into the new battens at 300-350mm centres. Screw the soundbreaker bars into the battens using the pre-drilled holes that run along the edge of the bars, use dry wall or universal screws for this. The wider corrugated section o the bars should be facing down into the room when they are attached.

    Step 4.

Fit the soundproof panels to the soundbreaker bars using dry wall or universal screws. The panels are fixed into the bars by screwing them into the corrugated section of the soundbreaker bar, you will not need to pre-drill any holes to fasten the boarding in place. You should have four bars per board to fix into. When you fit each board ensure they are tightly butted together, apply a bead of acoustic sealant along the edge of the boards to ensure they are acoustically sealed. You can also apply

sealant once you have installed all of the boards around the perimeter of the ceiling and between the edges of the panels to fill any small holes that might be left.

Allow a small gap around the edge of the ceiling, between the panels and the walls. This will reduce sound vibration through the walls and ceilings. Use the acoustic sealant to fill around the edge of the ceiling.

    Step 5.

Finish off your ceiling with either a plaster skim or taping and filling the tapered edge of the panels.

The following products are supplied with this soundproofing system:

How will my order be delivered?

The majority of orders we despatch are sent on pallets. We use a network of pallet distribution companies across the UK. All our pallet deliveries are kerbside deliveries. This means the pallet will be delivered as near to the delivery address as possible. Pallets are unloaded from the vehicles with a pallet truck. If it is possible the pallets can be dropped on driveways if they are accessible with the pallet truck.

Pallet deliveries are typically made on 7.5-tonne vehicles that are similar in size to bin lorries. Occasionally larger vehicles are used. If you know of any reason why it might be difficult to deliver to your address with this type of vehicle, please let us know so we can pass the information on to the delivery company. Typical delivery problems can include parking restrictions, access issues for certain size vehicles, low bridges and overhanging trees. Call 01423 339163 if you are unsure.

Unfortunately, the delivery drivers will not bring the goods into your property or unload the individual items from the pallets.

Many of our heavy items require two people to carry them safely.

All orders sent on pallets are wrapped and secured to the pallet to protect them while in transit. Once you have received your order, we would recommend storing the materials inside. If you plan on leaving your goods outside, you should use additional coverage to protect them from adverse weather conditions.

    Damaged or missing items

If items are damaged or missing when your order arrives, you should sign damaged or missing items on the driver’s paperwork. Call 01423339163 to let us know of the issue to allow us to rectify the problem quickly.

We might ask for a picture of the damage to speed up the process of arranging a suitable solution.

To enable us to resolve any issues with your delivery, it is essential that you sign for your delivery when it arrives.

Can I return items from my order? Yes, you can return unused items from your order that are in a salable condition. We can arrange to collect unused materials and bring them back to us. We would refund the cost of the items returned back to us, less the shipping cost incurred by the company collecting the items. The cost to return the goods would be confirmed at the point of arranging the return. The refund would be paid once the goods have been brought back and have been checked at our warehouse.
