Part E compliant separating floor solution to meet the airborne and impact performance standards
Part E Timber Floor Underlay & Ceiling System
Pass the sound test requirements in the Part E document using this timber floor and ceiling system. The system combines all the required elements to exceed the required levels and ensures that expensive retests and remedial work are unnecessary to correct a failed sound test.
It consists of the Soundbreaker Bar resilient channel isolation system, which decouples the ceiling from the joist. The isolation created using the system reduces the sound typically transferred between floors.
The system includes the 12mm Noisestop Acoustic Underlay to ensure the impact sound insulation test meets the requirements. It is laid over the timber subfloor below your floor finish to prevent impact sounds from transferring into the building’s structure.
The other elements within the soundproof system add mass and density and improve the ceiling’s ability to block sound transference between rooms. The DFM acoustic insulation and soundproof plasterboards ensure the area meets and exceeds the Part E Building Regulation standards.

It is important to note that when comparing the values, your separating solution must have a noise reduction level higher than the minimum airborne figure and a lower figure for the impact value. The higher the airborne rating, the better; the lower the impact rating, the better the solution performs.
Materials supplied with this system:

- Soundbraker bars 3m – Decoupling channel to isolate the stud frame from the boarding
- 12.5mm Acoustic plasterboard (two layers) 2400mm x 1200mm (2.88sqm) – Denser than standard plasterboard
Select the required sqm area from the dropdown box at the top of the page to see the quantities supplied with this system.
We recommend ordering areas individually and adding them to the basket rather than adding them to one large area. You can order multiple areas in the same order.
Part E Timber Floor Underlay & Ceiling System
Airborne sound insulation values
- RW 63dB
- RW+Ctr 58dB
Part E Building Regulations requires a minimum value of at least 43-45dB
Impact sound insulation values
- Ln,w 55dB
Part E Building Regulations requires a maximum permitted value of between 62-64dB
Note: Every 10 decibels(dB) reduction in noise level is roughly perceived as a halving of the perceived loudness. So, for instance, if you have a sound that measures 70dB and it decreases to 60dB, it would sound about half as loud to the human ear. Decibels explained.
The Part E Timber Floor Underlay & Ceiling System is designed for timber joist floors and ceilings.
Fitting overview
For more information on fitting the individual components, see the product pages, Materials supplied with this system section.
- Lay the 12mm noisestop Acoustic Underlay over the existing floor in a broken brick bond pattern. The mats must be adhered to the sub-floor using a floor-grade adhesive, use the Isobond adhesive for this.
- The cavity between the floor and ceiling is insulated with 100mm DFM acoustic insulation slabs. Sound insulation slabs cut larger than the opening of the joist will friction fit inside the cavity.
- Affix Soundbreaker bars to the ceiling joist at approximately 400mm centres. The resilient channels are run perpendicular to the joist direction and are attached by screwing them into the joist along the pre-drilled holes along one edge of the bar.
- The soundproof plasterboard layer is then screwed into the soundbreaker bar. Affixing them into the wide corrugated section with drywall screws. Both layers of plasterboard are screwed into the Soundbreaker bars.
- Once installed, the ceiling can be plastered or taped and filled before decorating.
Due to the nature of most of the materials we supply, orders are typically delivered on pallets.
All orders will be wrapped, protected, and secured to the pallet to ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. Goods will be delivered as near to the property as possible. The drivers will not be able to carry orders into your property.
Deliveries are made between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday.
Once an order has been placed, you will be notified of the expected delivery date. Please ensure someone is available to sign for the delivery.
We charge a flat delivery rate of £60 plus VAT for palletised deliveries. We do not charge per pallet, no matter how many pallets are used to deliver your order.
Orders placed for items weighing less than 20kg will be sent via courier for £20 plus VAT.
We have a high stock level, so we typically deliver orders in approximately three working days.
