Description

Noisestop 2+ panels are part of the Noisestop direct to wall soundproofing range. The combination of two layers acoustic plasterboard and the mass loaded vinyl centre that make up this soundproof board will block and absorb airborne sounds. Acoustic plasterboard is made to a higher density than normal plasterboard meaning it is much better at stopping sound transmission than normal plasterboard. The centre of the panel is a 5mm high density vinyl, this centre of the panel blocks sound that would normally transfer through a wall, it also reduces vibration of the plasterboard. As sound tries to pass through a solid surface the sound waves vibrate, by reducing this vibration the panel reduces the over all level of sound.

It is not always possible to install soundproofing systems that combine various acoustic products if you have a limited amount of space. Rooms that require soundproofing in your home, or work place environments like offices and meeting rooms with limited space can use this type of soundproofing panel to reduce conversation or television sound from passing between rooms. As a stand alone soundproofing panel the Noisestop 2+ panel is an ideal choice if you need to increase the sound insulation of a room, but do not want to lose valuable space in your room.

Fitting Noisestop 2+ panels

The most common application or these panels is direct to walls, this means bonding them directly on to the walls surface with plasterboard adhesive. By using this method you reduce the possibility of sound transferring through screw fixings. These boards can also be used to upgrade acoustic wall systems by fitting them to studs or soundbreaker bars. If you are soundproofing ceilings use these panels over an existing ceiling, or as part of a new acoustic ceiling.

  • Apply directly on to walls using plasterboard adhesive
  • Screw panels on to stud frames, soundbreaker bars or ceiling joists
  • Plaster directly on to the panel
  • Tapered edges mean you can tape and fill the edges as an alternative to plastering

We recommend that one bag of plasterboard adhesive and one tube of standard AC50 acoustic sealant is enough for every five boards.

Fit these panels directly on to your walls using plasterboard adhesive. This type of application, referred to as dot and dab means there is no need or mechanical fixings. Apply the plasterboard adhesive as per the instructions on the bag. Adhesive can be applied to the wall in fist size dabs use a minimum of 9 dabs per board. Ensure the boards are level as you apply them. Use the acoustic sealant along the edge of each board as you install them and around the perimeter of the wall. Cut the panels using a hand saw or circular saw to shape.

These panels can be used as part of an acoustic wall or ceiling soundproofing system, this will require them being fixed to stud walls, ceiling joists or soundbreaker bars. Use dry wall or universal screws to apply the boards to these structures. If you are fitting the panels on to ceilings they will require a minimum of 16 screws per board. Once the panels have been fitted you can plaster or tape and fill the tapered edges prior to decorating.

Reduce flanking noise

When you are considering any form of wall soundproofing you should take into account flanking sound. Sound travels around a building through any cavities it can find, one of the easiest ways for sound to pass through is between floor cavities. Sound transferring through these areas is flanking sound. When you soundproof a wall you should consider reducing the chance of sound transferring through floor cavities between the floor joists. If your floor joists are shared with a neighbouring property it is easy or sound to transfer through the floor. If you are soundproofing a party wall you should check to see if floor joists are going through to your neighbours property. Do this by checking which way your floorboards are running. If they run in the same direction as the wall the chances are you floor joists will be running into the wall, this will increase the chance of flanking sound transferring between the properties.

The easiest way to reduce flanking sound through your floors is to insulate between the floor joists. Remove a few floor boards up against the wall and fill the cavity against the wall with acoustic insulation 80k/m³ would be a suitable density of slab to use. Fit the slabs against the wall, coming back into the room approximately 600mm, or the width off a slab.

How do you cut these soundproof boards?

Answer: These panels can be cut with a hand saw, circular saw or jigsaw.

Can the panels be fixed directly on to walls?

Answer: The Noisestop 2 and Noisestop 2+ panels can be bonded straight on to brick walls or plastered walls. Using a plasterboard adhesive the boards can be bonded straight on to your wall. You do not need any mechanical fixing for these types of soundproof panels.

How do you finish these boards?

Answer: The boards are tapered edge acoustic plasterboard; this means they are ready to be plastered once they have been fitted. An alternative method of finishing the panels would be to tape and fill the tapered edge before decorating. The panels are dual sided so it does not matter which side faces into the wall and which side faces into the room.

Can I soundproof my ceilings with these boards?

Answer: Yes you can soundproof ceilings using these boards. They can be used to go straight over an existing ceiling as an upgrade to an existing ceiling. Alternatively they can be used as part of an acoustic ceiling solution for high levels of sound reduction. The panels must be fixed into ceilings with screws, you can not use adhesive to fix these panels to your ceiling.

Can I attach things on to the wall afterwards?

Answer: Once you have completed the work you can treat the wall as you would any other wall. Try to avoid too many fixing going through the wall as this may cause sound transfer. Suitable plugs and screws should be used to fix to the wall, we would recommend plasterboard plugs be used for hanging lightweight items.
