Performance Data

Untreated brick wall DnT,w

Single skin 100mm brick wall 38db

Treated brick wall DnT,w

Wall System 2 applied 54dB

Improvement DnT,w

Noise reduction with treatment 16dB

Note: Every 10 decibels(dB) reduction in noise level is roughly perceived as a halving of the perceived loudness. So, for instance, if you have a sound that measures 70dB and it decreases to 60dB, it would sound about half as loud to the human ear.

Fitting Wall System 2

  • Install a stud frame if one is not already in place
  • Fill inside the cavity between each stud with the DFM acoustic insulation slabs. Ensure the slabs are packed tightly between the studs
  • Attach the Noisestop 1 Plus Panel to the stud frame with screws. Leave a 2-3mm gap around the wall’s perimeter to avoid noise transfer. Apply a bead of acoustic sealant to each joint and the edge of the wall
  • Finish the system as a standard plasterboard. The panels are supplied with a tapered edge, which allows for dry lining or plastering
  • If you are reinstating electrical outlets, use acoustic putty pads inside the back boxes

NOTE ON FLANKING SOUND – Before installing any soundproofing system, it is important to consider any flanking paths for the sound. These are areas around the wall where sound will bypass the soundproofing and enter the room. The most common flanking path for sounds would be above or below the wall, this would be through a floor or ceiling cavity. If these areas are constructed from timber joists, you should consider filling the cavities above or below the area with DFM acoustic insulation to stop potential flanking noise.

Alternative Solutions

Alternative solutions will offer different soundproofing levels or another installation method that might suit your requirements.

Essential Soundproofing Rules

Achieve the very best wall soundproofing results by following these essential soundproofing rules. These are adding mass/density to the area, isolating or decoupling the new structure from the existing and increasing sound absorption. These rules of soundproofing apply whether you are attempting to soundproof a stud wall or solid brick walls. Increasing mass makes it harder for the sound to transfer. The variety of high-mass products will block a great range of sounds. Decoupling the structure will reduce sound as it vibrates through a solid structure. Increasing absorption allows the wall to absorb the sound energy. These soundproofing principles are built into the design and specification of our wall soundproofing products and systems.

Mass/Density

Adding mass/density to an area blocks sound transfer. Using materials with different densities will reduce a greater range of frequencies.

Isolation

Creating isolation or decoupling the existing structure from the new enhances sound insulation.

Absorption

Increase sound absorption with materials that absorb sound waves and reduce the energy that carries the sound.

Soundproofing Walls FAQs

The best way to soundproof a wall is to block the sound transmission from one room to another. The most effective methods to soundproof walls are:

Add mass: increasing the density of the wall by adding mass. Use mass loaded vinyl, soundproof plasterboards and high density acoustic insulation to enhance the sound insulation.

Decoupling: By isolating the existing structure from the new wall, you will reduce the vibration sound that transmits through the wall. The AcoustiClip system is the best method of decoupling walls and ceilings.

Sound absorption: The walls ability to absorb sound waves is crucial in noise reduction. Product combinations work best for overall sound absorption or sound dampening. Acoustic insulation and soundproof membranes will dampen and absorb sound waves as they come into contact with them.

All our solutions are designed to incorporate as many of these as possible.

The best way to soundproof party walls and internal stud walls is to use a soundproof system that combines materials to offer the highest level of noise reduction.

We recommend the AcosutClip System to soundproof any wall. The systems incorporate all the soundproofing products to ensure exceptional noise reduction against airborne and vibration noise. Provided with the systems are the AcoustiClip, AcoustiChannel, acoustic insulation, Noisestop 1+ Panels, acoustic plasterboard 15mm and acoustic sealants.

We have the AcoustiClip Direct System, our most popular solution for party walls. If you require soundproofing for excessively noisy neighbours or studios, we have the AcoustiClip Solid Wall System. The AcoustiClip Stud Wall System will restore privacy within your home for internal stud partitions.

Our slimmest wall soundproofing solutions are the Noisestop Sielnt Panel or Wall System 2.

Silent Panel 30mm: The Noisestop Silent offers the best acoustic performance of wall soundproofing panels. At only 30mm thick, it can be used to soundproof walls in the tightest of spaces.

Wall System 2: Our thinnest solution combining soundproofing materials is Wall System 2. If you have limited space and require maximum sound insulation this is our recommended solution.

All our products and systems for walls and ceilings are supplied with acoustic plasterboard as the final finish. This type of plasterboard can be finished in the same way as standard plasterboards.

The acoustic plasterboards have a tapered edge which allows for taping and jointing if you want to avoid having them plastered.

Yes, you can reinstate electrical outlets into any of our soundproofing solutions.

We can provide acoustic putty pads for the electrical back boxes for single and double sockets.

You can use your wall as any other wall when attaching lightweight items.

For heavier objects like wall-mounted TVs, you must secure them to the structural wall behind the soundproofing. Direct sound transmission through these fixings would typically be minimised due to the mass and absorption of the soundproof panels.

    Product Fitting Guide

    Wall System 2

    Wall System 2 Soundproofing
    Wall System 2

Thin wall soundproofing system at only 43mm this solution offers great soundproofing with limited space loss

Wall System 2 provides soundproofing for domestic party walls as well as forming an acoustic wall to be used as an internal lining to improve the sound insulation of existing walls.

    Fitting Wall System 2

Wall System 2 is one of the thinnest wall soundproofing systems available. This solution combines thin high density soundproof products to reduce airborne sound through party walls. System 2 is based on using 25mm battens fixed directly to the wall. The soundproofing is then installed as detailed. Fitting Wall System 2 reduces good levels of airborne sound and with space loss to the room of less than 50mm is one of the thinnest solutions for noisy neighbours.

    Wall preparation

Before you begin installing the new acoustic wall you should remove all wall decorations, skirting boards, coving and picture rails. Electrical outlets should be removed prior to any work, extend electrical cable as required to reinstate once the work is complete. All decorative features that have been removed can be reinstated once the wall is finished.

    Step 1.

    Installing the frame

To ensure space loss to the room is kept to a minimum the battening should be fixed to the wall being soundproofed. The 25mm frame should be fixed to the wall using a strong no nails adhesive or mechanically fixed with nails or screws. Always ensure the batten is well secured to the wall before commencing the installation.

    Step 2.

    Insulating the stud frame

The new stud frames should be filled with the DFM acoustic insulation. The stud frame should be filled with no gaps between the insulation or the insulation and the stud work.

Acoustic insulation can be cut with a hand saw or an old bread knife. Measure the opening between the studs and cut the insulation approximately 5mm wider. Cutting the slabs wider than the opening will mean the slabs will friction fit between the studs. You shouldn’t need to use fixing to hold the slabs in place; if necessary a screw or nail can be fastened into the side of the stud to hold the insulation in place.

    Step 3.

    Fitting the soundproof panels

The soundproof panels are fastened to the stud work using dry wall or universal screws. You will not need to drill the panels before you attach them. Screw straight through the panel into the timber frame. Do not over tighten the screws, they should be flush or just below the surface of the plasterboard face.

NOTE: the panels are fitted with the blue face of the acoustic plasterboard facing into the room. The mass loaded barrier mat on the back of the board faces into the wall.

When you reach the edges of the wall you will need to cut the soundproof boards. All Noisestop soundproof panels can be cut with a Stanley knife or hand saw. If you have power tools they can be cut with circular saws or a jigsaw.

It is important to ensure that every edge of the panels is well fitted and sealed. Do not leave gaps between the boards; ensure they are butted up together. Use AC50 acoustic sealant along the edges of each panel as you install them. Once you’ve fitted the first board run a bead of sealant along the edge and then push the next panel up to the board. This will guarantee each panel has been sealed along the edge with acoustic sealant. Once you have fitted all the boards you can go round the wall making sure any gaps have been filled with the acoustic sealant.

    Step 4.

    Finishing you wall

Because all the soundproof panels in the Noisestop range are manufactured with a 12.5mm acoustic plasterboard with tapered edges you can chose to finish the panels in two different ways. Because these panels are plasterboard you can plaster skim straight on to the face of the panels using multi skim thin coat plaster. Alternatively the tapered edge along two edges of the panel can be taped, filled and sanded.

Reinstate your wall furniture as necessary. Electrical points can be fitted back into the wall. To avoid cutting out sections of the wall we would recommend surface mounted sockets. Always ensure that any areas that have been removed are sealed with acoustic sealant.

This means the pallet will be delivered as near to the delivery address as possible. Pallets are unloaded from the vehicles with a pallet truck. If it is possible the pallets can be dropped on driveways if they are accessible with the pallet truck.

Pallet deliveries are typically made on 7.5-tonne vehicles that are similar in size to bin lorries. Occasionally larger vehicles are used. If you know of any reason why it might be difficult to deliver to your address with this type of vehicle, please let us know so we can pass the information on to the delivery company. Typical delivery problems can include parking restrictions, access issues for certain size vehicles, low bridges and overhanging trees. Call 01423 339163 if you are unsure.

Unfortunately, the delivery drivers will not bring the goods into your property or unload the individual items from the pallets.

Many of our heavy items require two people to carry them safely.

All orders sent on pallets are wrapped and secured to the pallet to protect them while in transit. Once you have received your order, we would recommend storing the materials inside. If you plan on leaving your goods outside, you should use additional coverage to protect them from adverse weather conditions.
