Soundproofing Timber Ceilings FAQs

The best method of soundproofing a ceiling is to use a combination of products in a soundproof system.

Soundproof systems will add mass, increase sound absorption and decouple the existing structure from the new.

We recommend using the AcoustiClip system to soundproof your ceilings. The combination of materials supplied with the AcoustiClip Concrete Ceiling System comprises all the required products to sound insulate the ceiling against impact and airborne sounds effectively.

Unless you have very high ceilings, you will probably need to soundproof the existing concrete structure. Our recommended concrete ceiling solution is the AcoustiClip Concrete Ceiling System.

The AcoustiClip Ceiling System is fitted directly to the concrete ceiling. In certain situations, you might require timber battens to increase the ceiling depth to allow for utility services. If this is the case the AcosutClip ceiling system can be fitted to the timber battens.

If you are using downlighters in your ceiling, you should fit acoustic/fire hoods over the lights to ensure the acoustic integrity of the ceiling.

Stopping impact sound through the floor above is difficult to stop from below. In an ideal world, you would soundproof the floors to stop the impact sound. If you can’t access the floor, the best solution is to install a ceiling isolated from the existing.

If you have very high ceilings, you could install a completely new ceiling with joists without connection to the existing ceiling. If this option does not apply, you must use a system that isolates the new ceiling even if it is in contact with the joist.

The best solution for achieving isolation is to use the AcoustiClip Concrete Ceiling System.

Essential Soundproofing Rules

Achieve the very best ceiling soundproofing results by following these essential soundproofing rules. These are adding mass/density to the area, isolating or decoupling the new structure from the existing and increasing sound absorption. These rules of soundproofing apply whether you are attempting to soundproof a timber ceiling or concrete. Increasing mass makes it harder for the sound to transfer. The variety of high-mass products will block a great range of sounds. Isolating the structure will reduce sound as it vibrates through a solid structure. Increasing absorption allows the ceiling to absorb the sound energy. These soundproofing principles are built into the design and specification of our ceiling soundproofing products and systems.

Mass/Density

Adding mass/density to an area blocks sound transfer. Using materials with different densities will reduce a greater range of frequencies.

Isolation

Creating isolation or decoupling the existing structure from the new enhances sound insulation.

Absorption

Increase sound absorption with materials that absorb sound waves and reduce the energy that carries the sound.
