Soundproofing stud walls to minimise noise transfer

The most effective method of soundproofing stud walls is adding mass, creating separation and increasing sound absorption. Adding mass to the wall with soundproof plasterboards, acoustic membranes, and acoustic insulation will block airborne sounds. Decoupe the wall and enhance its ability to absorb vibrations with the AcoustiClip system, reducing sounds transferring via vibration through the wall. Isolating the existing wall will make it more difficult for sound to pass between rooms. Improving the sound absorption of the wall with the decoupling and extra mass dampens the sound’s energy, resulting in a soundproofed wall that will minimise unwanted noise transfer through stud and party walls.

Effective soundproofing principles

Adding mass: Increasing the mass/density of a stud wall is crucial for soundproofing and reducing airborne sounds. Product combinations with different levels of mass, including soundproof panels, acoustic membranes and sound insulation slabs, will increase the mass of the wall.

Decoupling: Decouple the stud wall using a sound isolation clip system. The AcoustiClip system provides the best sound isolation for studs and party walls.

Sound absorption: Increase the sound absorption of stud walls using soundproof panels. The AcoustiClip isolation clip provides sound absorption as it absorbs vibrations and reduces the sound’s energy.

Soundproofing walls FAQs

The best way to soundproof walls is to use a combination of products in a soundproof system.

Adding mass and density, decoupling the existing structure from the new and increasing the sound absorption capability of the wall ensures the highest noise reduction.

The Acousticlip System is the best solution for soundproofing stud walls. The AcoustiClip Stud Wall System combines all the elements required to soundproof your walls successfully, making it our recommended stud wall soundproofing solution.

Wall soundproofing really will stop noise coming through your walls from your neighbour. Stopping every noise type and level is impossible, but you can significantly reduce unwanted sounds using the correct solution.

Our most popular solution is the Acousticlip Direct to Wall System.

If you require soundproofing and space loss to be kept to a minimum, then the best product is the Noisestop Silent Panel.

Competent DIYers can install all of our wall soundproofing solutions. We recommend using local tradespeople if you do not want to fit the soundproofing yourself. Local builders, joiners and plasterers would be the most suitable tradespeople to contact. We can provide full-fitting guides for all our soundproofing solutions.

We recommend soundproofing the alcove areas. You should be able to leave the chimney breast as this area tends to have additional layers of brick which add mass to the area.

Our soundproof products and soundproofing systems are finished with acoustic plasterboard. Once the soundproofing is installed, you can bring the wall up to decorative standards without adding additional boarding. The most common method to finish the walls is to have them plastered. Alternatively, you can tape and join the edges along the tapered edge of the boards before decorating. This means you don’t need a plasterer to skim your wall. Once brought up to decorative standard you can use lining paper or paint to decorate the panels.

Yes, you can reinstate electrical outlets to your soundproofed wall. Use acoustic putty pads inside electrical back boxes to ensure the acoustic integrity of the wall. If you are extending wires through the wall for lights, then we recommend sealing the hole using an acoustic sealant.

Lightweight fittings can be secured into the soundproofing. Pictures and mirrors can be attached to the soundproofing.
