Noisestop Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Barrier Shield is a versatile soundproof underlay used in soundproofing applications for floors, walls, and ceilings.
This high-density 1.2m by 1.2m Barrier Shield mass-loaded vinyl is a slim acoustic mat that increases the mass and density of the area it is applied to, blocking airborne sounds.
MLV is used in manufacturing soundproof panels and acoustic underlays as well as on an overlay system to improve the sound insulation of timber floors.
- Soundproofing: Walls, floors and ceilings
- Size: 1200mm x 1200mm (1.44sqm)
- Density: 5kg/m2 and 10kg/m2
- Noise reduction:
- 5kg/m2 26dB
- 10kg/m2 32dB
Noisestop Barrier Shield – High-Density Mass-Loaded Vinyl for Floors, Walls & Ceilings
Noisestop Barrier Shield mass-loaded vinyl (MLV) is a versatile soundproof mat used in soundproofing applications for floors, walls, and ceilings. This high-density Barrier Shield increases the mass and density of the area it is applied to, blocking airborne sounds.
Soundproof floors using a Barrier Shield MLV
Install Barrier Shield matting over timber flooring to reduce airborne sounds. Simply lay your floor finish directly over Barrier Shield, including carpet, engineered wood flooring, LVT, and laminate. Use a 6mm ply or MDF board if laying tiles.
Soundproof enclosures with Barrier Shield MLV
Apply the vinyl to the inside of enclosures to block airborne sounds. Combine the Barrier Shield with acoustic Eggbox Foam as an internal lining for housing around noisy machinery and pumps.
- Sheet size 1200mm x 1200mm (1.44sqm)
- Thicknesses available
- 2.5mm
- 5mm
- Density
- 5kg/m2
- 10kg/m2
Barrier Shield has a recommended static Service Temperature of -50°C up to 100°C, and the surface spread of flame is tested to ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302, which means it is Self-Extinguishing.
Free from SVHC
Barrier Shield products are free from substances of very high concern (SVHC), such as lead, halogens, and unrefined aromatic oils.
Tear strength
Barrier Shield is manufactured by an extrusion process, which gives this MLV high mechanical strength, making it easy to handle and install. Some manufacturing processes that only use calendaring or casting can cause MLV materials to tear more easily.
Flexibility
The Barrier Shield is thin and highly flexible, which allows easy installation of round corners, pipework, square ducting and steel framework without cracking and tearing. Good lay flat (high memory form) even at cold temperatures (for example, after warehouse storage).
Consistency and stability
High-speed mixing and supercooling ensure that the products are physically stable and robust. They can be warehoused in cold storage without risk of cracking or product deterioration. Under normal environmental conditions, the material does not chemically degrade or change its physical properties over time.
Surface finish
Barrier Shield MLV has specifically been designed to provide better slip resistance and help safer floor installation. It is manufactured with either one side embossed and one side smooth or two sides embossed. The embossed surface increases the surface area to aid adhesion to other laminates.
Clean and oil-free surface.
Performance when tested as a stand-alone barrier. Results will vary depending on the situation in which the materials are applied.
- 10kg Barrier Shield 32dB
- 5kg Barrier Shield 26dB
Note: Every 10 decibels(dB) reduction in noise level is roughly perceived as a halving of the perceived loudness. So, for instance, if you have a sound that measures 70dB and it decreases to 60dB, it would sound about half as loud to the human ear. Decibels Explained.
- Cuts with a sharp knife or heavy-duty scissors
- Install in a brick bond pattern over the floor
- Butt the edges together and use High Tack Tape along the joins
- If required, bond to the floor with Isobond Adhesive (Part E requires the mats to be bonded for new builds and conversions)
Soundproof Enclosures
Line the inside of your enclosure with Barrier Shield.
- Apply the Barrier Shield to the sides of your enclosure using a strong spray adhesive.
- Seal any edges and joins with acoustic sealant.
- Apply a layer of Eggbox Foam over the Barreir Shiled using a strong spray adhesive.
The combination of materials adds mass and sound absorption, reducing airborne and vibration sounds.
Due to the nature of our materials, most orders are delivered on pallets.
