The Three Best Solutions for Soundproofing Walls

In this article, we will highlight the three best solutions for soundproofing walls. We know there are many solutions for soundproofing walls, and once you’ve read this page, you will have a better understanding of which option best suits your requirements. We will highlight the space requirements, costs, and effectiveness of three of the most popular wall soundproofing solutions. Noisestop Systems has been providing soundproofing solutions to homeowners for over twenty years, so when it comes to soundproofing your home, we know what we are talking about!

Top three solutions for soundproofing walls

The three wall soundproofing solutions we have chosen for this article are the most popular wall soundproofing products on the market. We know this because, across all the products and systems in our wall soundproofing range, these are the most frequently bought by homeowners in the UK. The three solutions we are looking at are listed below.
  • Noisestop Silent Panel: A direct-to-wall soundproofing panel for party walls and stud walls, it is very slim, only 30mm, fits directly onto the wall, and is great for soundproofing against general domestic noises such as TVs and conversation.
  • AcoustiClip Direct System: Our most popular party wall soundproofing system. It’s applied directly to party walls to soundproof against noisy neighbours, or if you really want to increase privacy in your own home, so your neighbours won’t hear you.
  • AcoustiClip Stud Wall System: A high-performance stud wall soundproofing system that is used to soundproof internal stud walls to increase privacy in your home. This system can also be installed as an independent wall to offer maximum noise reduction for home studios, or against a party wall to soundproof against excessively loud, noisy neighbours.

Option 1.

Noisestop Silent Panel – Direct to wall soundproofing panel

The slimmest of the three options, the Noisestop Silent Panel, is only 30mm thick. These soundproof panels are your best option if you need to soundproof your walls but have very limited space.

Noisestop Silent Panel

The silent Panel combines the following materials into a single product that adheres directly to the wall surface. Please note that when the panels are installed, the plasterboard layer faces into the room.

30mm Noisestop Silent Panel

  • Acoustic plasterboard 15mm
  • Mass-loaded vinyl 3mm
  • Acoustic-grade closed-cell foam
  • Mass-loaded vinyl 3mm
These product combinations add mass to the wall, which blocks the transfer of airborne sound. The layers that make up the board stop different frequencies, which ensures maximum protection within the 30mm space loss.

Soundproofing panel to soundproof stud and party walls

The Silent Panel is used to soundproof party walls and stud walls. When applied to a party wall, it will block low-level noise, such as TVs and conversations. The weaker the existing wall’s sound insulation, the more sound insulation the board will provide. Single-skin brick walls are typically relatively poor at blocking noise, so the Silent Panel would definitely be a good choice.
If you are considering soundproofing a stud wall, the Silent Panel should definitely be considered due to its high mass and density. It will undoubtedly increase the performance of lightweight stud walls against airborne noise.

Cost of soundproofing a wall with the Silent Panel

For a 10 sqm wall, the soundproofing panels would cost approximately £500.

The silent Panel is your best choice if you are soundproofing a room with minimal space. If the choice comes down to budget, these soundproof panels are at the lower end of the scale compared to other, more in-depth solutions. You might choose these boards because the level of noise insulation required is relatively low, or you are future-proofing your property in case a noisy neighbour moves next door.

Option2.

AcoustiClip Direct System – Party wall soundproofing system

AcoustiClip Direct is our most popular party wall soundproofing system. When we mention ‘systems’, we are referring to a solution that combines multiple products, unlike the soundproof panels, which are a single board. Soundproof systems are multiple products installed to create an acoustic wall.
Soundproof systems will offer levels of soundproofing when compared to panels, but they do take up more space, and they can cost more, but in some cases, not too much more.

What is the AcoustiClip Direct System

The system is a combination of soundproofing products applied directly to the party wall to reduce high levels of domestic noise. Because the solution applies to the wall, it minimises space loss. This solution will effectively soundproof your walls against noisy neighbours for less than 8cm, not bad if you have annoying neighbours.

Supplied in the AcoustiClip Direct Kit

The items supplied with the AcoustiClip Direct Kit combine all the elements required for effective soundproofing against airborne and vibration sounds. They will add mass, create isolation and improve the wall’s ability to absorb sound.

  • AcoustiClips: Decoupling clips applied to the surface of the wall to isolate the existing wall from the new acoustic one.
  • AcoustiChannel: A metal furring channel inserted into the AcoustiClip to form the base of the acoustic wall.
  • Acoustic insulation: Any good soundproof wall uses acoustic insulation to add mass and sound absorption, which is installed in the wall’s cavity.
  • Soundproof boards: Two layers provided, a 15mm acoustic plasterboard and a specialist board, the Noisestop 1 Plus Panel. The 1 Plus Panel is a 12.5mm acoustic board with a layer of mass-loaded vinyl bonded to it to increase mass and reduce vibrations.
  • Acoustic sealants: These are applied along the edges of boards and around the perimeter to ensure acoustic integrity.

Based on a 10 sqm wall, it would cost approximately £600 to buy the AcoustiClip Direct System.

Highly rated party wall soundproofing system

The AcoustiClip Direct is the most effective wall soundproofing solution applied directly to the wall. If you are considering soundproofing a wall because you don’t want to hear your neighbour, or you don’t want the neighbouring property to listen to what you are doing, then this solution is highly recommended becuase it works really well with minimal space loss.

Option 3.

AcoustiClip Stud Wall System – Stud and independent wall soundproofing solution

Now we get to the wall soundproofing solution that offers the highest noise reduction level of all. This AcoustiClip Stud Wall System is used to sound-insulate internal stud walls, improving privacy in your home. Still, it can also be applied as an independent party wall soundproofing solution, and that is when you achieve the best soundproofing levels.
If you don’t have a stud wall in place, then this solution will be the thickest of the three. The AcoustiClip system is just under 8cm thick, and when you add the stud frame, you could be looking at a solution that is up to 15 cm thick, depending on the depth of the stud.

Soundproofing a stud wall using the AcoustiClip System

Soundproof the internal stud walls with this system to restore privacy and enhance comfort in your home. If you need a solution to stop the noise from a noisy teenager gaming in their bedroom or from an ensuite bathroom, this will be your best option.
Upgrade the sound insulation of existing stud walls by applying this solution to one side of the wall. You will need to remove the plasterboard from one side of the wall. Once the plasterboard has been removed, you can install the system to create your new soundproofed wall.

Soundproof  walls using an independent wall soundproofing system

The materials supplied with the Independent WallSoundproofing System are used to create an acoustically independent wall that will stop loud noises, suitable for home studios or for dealing with really loud neighbour noise.
You will need to build a new stud wall, independent of the party wall, if one does not exist. We recommend leaving a minimum 10mm gap between the new and existing walls. Once the wall is in place, you can then fit the soundproofing to create your new independent soundproof wall.

What’s supplied with the AcoustiClip Stud Wall Kit?

The AcoustiClip systems use very similar products to create the acoustic wall; the difference is the depth of acoustic insulation, which is thicker for the stud frames.
